SUPPLEMENTAL LUBRICANT FOR SINTERED METAL BEARINGS
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
PermaGel is a plastic-like lubricant in gel form specifically developed to lubricate sintered bearings in fractional horsepower motors. PermaGel greatly extends bearing service life in a wide variety of FHP motor applications and is useful as a backup oil reservoir to ensure against partially impregnated or dry bearings.
PermaGel is dispensed like grease around the outer diameter of the sintered bearing using inexpensive applicators. Unlike grease, the gel provides a much greater reservoir of oil – up to 20% of the oil is available for lubricating the bearing. PermaGel is thermally stable. It does not leak, shift or separate and requires no reservoir in the endshield assembly.
PermaGel is a blend of formulated bearing oil and thickening additives. PermaGel releases its oil through the capillary pull of the sintered bearing on an as-needed basis. The added oil storage and controlled release rate to the bearing greatly extend bearing service life. Typical applications will double their motor life using a small amount of PermaGel in contact with the bearing. Oil flow through the pores of the sintered bearing is restricted with PermaGel, so oil leakage out the shaft is reduced. In many cases, oil slingers and catchers can be eliminated, simplifying design and reducing cost.
PermaGel can be blended from any oil in our line of synthetic bearing oils available from the Permawick Company. Our PAO and ester based oils are blended specifically for FHP motor bearings. These oils have outstanding thermal and chemical stability, possessing a usable temperature range of -50°F to 390°F. Permawick oils are oxidation and corrosion resistant and provide long life under demanding conditions.
PRODUCT BENEFITS
·         Extends Bearing Service life
·         Low Per Motor Cost
·         Prevents Bearing Failure Due to Partially Impregnated Bearings
·         Reduces Oil Leakage From the Shaft
·         Reduces Parts/Simplifies Design (Can eliminate Oil Slingers and Oil Catchers, etc.)
·         Eliminates Ball Bearings in Many Applications
·         Maximizes Low Noise, Sintered Metal Bearing Technology

USAGE INSTRUCTIONS
·        PermaGel has a shelf life of 1 year.
·        Impregnate the bearing with the same oil used in the PermaGel to avoid unwanted chemical reactions and contamination.
·        PermaGel should be applied as a bead around the outer diameter of sintered bearings. Good bearing contact is a must for proper bearing lubrication. Do not allow PermaGel to come into direct contact with the journal area or the shaft – this will result in poor bearing performance. PermaGel can also be applied as small dots placed symmetrically around the bearing, but care should again be taken to ensure good contact with the outer diameter of the bearing.
DURABILITY TESTING (HVAC - AUTOMOTIVE)
Speed/RPMs                        Temperature            Hours            Result
High (13V) 4000 Rpm                                                           High (50°C)                    250                              Passed
High (13V) 4000 Rpm                                                           Low (-10°C)                    250                              Passed
Variable 200-4000 Rpm                                                       Room Temp                   5000                            Passed
NOTE: For motors lubricated with PermaGel, noise levels are significantly reduced, as compared to ball bearings and per-motor cost is drastically reduced.
DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS
  • Eliminates ball bearings on the opposite shaft end, where loads are 1/6th of the shaft end.
  • Reduces material required for stamped endshield
